Rescue Dog Is Elected Mayor of Colorado Town

It was a tight mayoral race. Just a few weeks ago, Buster the Cat, was in the lead by 300 votes. But at the 11th hour, supporters of Pa Kettle, the Search and Rescue Bloodhound, pulled out all the stops and the dog with the soulful eyes swooped into first place, thus claiming the prestigious title, Mayor of Divide, Colorado.

Other contenders in the race included a hedgehog, a wolf, a donkey and numerous other cats and dogs. All together there were 11 candidates. To see all of the candidates click here.

Pa Kettle, the bloodhound succeeds Walter, a three-legged cat, and will hold his mayoral post for two years. He started his term on April 8th.

This wild and wacky mayoral race is actually part of a creative fundraiser hosted by the Teller Regional Animal Shelter. The Shelter holds a “special election” every other year to find shelter animals forever homes while also raising money. This year, the election brought in $12,000 for the shelter. The Teller Regional Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter and greatly depends on the funds generated by this mayoral race to fulfill their mission.

In this special election, cash unabashedly equals votes. One dollar buys you one vote, and voters can vote as many times as they want and for as many candidates as they see fit. (Incidentally, that doesn’t make this spoof election all that different from real elections thanks to the recent landmark ruling by the United States Supreme Court.) Unlike other elections, however, all the votes are tax-deductible since 100% of the proceeds go to the shelter.
